New research shows that pregnant women often “glow” and this may not be a metaphor.
Scientists studying ultraweak photon emission (UPE) have found that living organisms, including humans, emit a faint, natural light that fades after death – and even sparks brightly at conception.
Researchers claim that living beings emit a faint light
The study was published in The Journal of Physical Chemistry Letters Researchers have discovered that cells emit ultraweak photons (light particles so weak they cannot be seen by the human eye but can be detected with sensitive imaging equipment like EMCCD cameras).ACS Publications).
The phenomenon, known as UPE, occurs in the spectral range of 200–1000 nanometres and has been detected across plants, animals and humans. Researchers observed a stark contrast between the light emissions of live mice and those of dead mice. The photon output dropped significantly after death.

Light burst at conception
A previous study also showed that a “flash” of light occurs at the moment of fertilization. The zinc spark that is produced when a sperm hits an egg produces millions of photons within an instant.
Together, these findings give scientific support to the idea that life is radiant. Vahid Salari of the University of Calgary explained how UPE may one day be applied in medicine to monitor cell health and stress, without invasive procedures.
Why pregnant women seem to glow
It is possible that the popular expression “expectant mothers are glowing” does not refer only to an emotional glow. The metaphor of “glowing” may be a result of increased metabolic activity, skin circulation changes, and heightened cell processes.
Monitoring cellular lights could help in fertility treatment, prenatal health and early disease detection.
