The Spanish Government recently approved the Environmental Impact Declaration of a long awaited beach renewal project in Marbella. The project will include four beaches between La Venus & El Ancon. It has a budget in the amount of 8.5 millions euros. Although this is a good thing for Marbella local officials are wondering why their beaches weren’t included.
Marbella’s town hall is concerned that San Pedro has been overlooked. Felix Romero from the local council pointed out the request originally included the stabilisation and protection of San Pedro’s coast, but that no updates had been provided. “It would seem that San Pedro is being forgotten again,” said he.
Romero also criticized the lack of communication by the central government. “The media knew about the approval before us,” he said, calling this disrespectful to local administration.
The funding is another major concern. Romero asked if there was a budget to implement the promised work. He said that if there was no money then the promised improvements and infrastructure would not be possible.
Madrid has been contacted by the local authorities to clarify their position. San Pedro is not excluded from the future regeneration of San Pedro and they want to know that there will be proper investments.
Tourism and quality of living along the Costa del Sol are dependent on beach regeneration. Residents of San Pedro hope that their stretch will get the attention they deserve.
