Sami James’ name is currently being heard a lot in the Costa del Sol, Spain. Sami James, a Spanish-born musician with an Argentinian and English father, represents the rich cultural, linguistic, and musical influences that are present in the area.
Sami is bilingual and bicultural. A product of the Costa del Sol, his music is eclectic and reflects these qualities. Sami is an active man. From the summer festival stages, to intimate gigs with The Rabbit Holes, Blue Sky Duo and his solo band, Sami’s instinctive songwriting and magnetic performances have created a unique niche in the industry.
Sami began his career at the age of 16 when he picked up a Guitar, learned a few chords and started putting together songs. He shares that he didn’t have any musical training. “But I was always surrounded by good music – Fleetwood Mac, The Police – playing in my mum or dad’s cars.” These early influences, along with his love of 90s Britpop such as Blur and Oasis shaped his style. He describes his eclectic tastes as “anything with heart”.
Sami James not without its hiccups
Sami has faced many challenges in his journey. He made the brave decision to stop drinking a year ago after the COVID-19 pandemic ravaged the live music industry. His passion and strength have made him a performer worth watching. He has been dazzling festival audiences this summer with a mix of his original music and crowd-pleasing cover songs. Sami explains, “Many venue owners are reluctant to book original artists because it can be a risk. “People want to hear familiar songs. In a place like Brighton, they’d ask why you’re doing covers – it’s not a cover band city there. I know I am good,” he says quietly, “but people don’t always realize it.”
Sami is in for some exciting times. Eliot Kennedy is a renowned music producer who has worked with Take That, Gary Barlow and his hit Everything Changes. They are planning to work together on a project in the fall, which could propel Sami to greater heights.
Kennedy joins other renowned names in the industry at Sony Music to contribute to the Myxa, an innovative device. The cutting-edge gadget enables users to remix and manipulate music by isolating and controlling individual “stems” – such as drums, bass, guitars, and vocals, for a dynamic, hands-on music experience. “It is crafted by music fans for music lovers,” he says.
Sami’s new EP, released recently, continues his balance between recording, writing and performing while remaining true to his roots. Sami’s story is one that involves perseverance, cultural integration, and a love of music that touches the heart. Sami James will be a star on the Costa del Sol, and beyond. He is working with Kennedy in order to expand his sound.
