Recycling like no one else – the Costa del Sol

The data collected by 2024 on selective waste collection shows that Costa del Sol residents are the most environmentally conscious in Andalusia and Spain.

Manuel Cardeña, president of the Mancomunidad de Municipios (commonwealth of municipalities) de la Costa del Sol, has announced that the region’s recycling ratios for light packaging and glass way overpass regional and national averages.

In 2024, Mancomunidad collected 15.50 million kilos (29.26 kg per person) of light packaging. The average for Andalusia is 14.40 kg and 20.40kg throughout Spain. It was possible because 4,049 containers were yellow, with one container per 131 inhabitants. The glass recycling was also outstanding, with 14.9 millions kilos of glass collected or 28.24 kilograms per resident (that is a lot wine), compared to 15.30 kg and 19.10 kilograms in Andalusia. This was made possible by 3,514 containers in green (one container per 151 residents).

Cardeña praised the region’s leadership in transforming waste into resources, thanking residents for their awareness and efficient management and the contractor, Urbaser. He stressed the importance of continuing efforts to improve recycling rates. This will benefit both local economies and the environment.
