Real Madrid has already begun planning their defense for 2026. Their next defensive piece may come from Anfield.
Reports in Spain suggest ‘los blancos’ are close to sealing an agreement with Liverpool’s Ibrahima Konate, whose contract runs out next summer.
Madrid’s interest has been evident for some time, but this move is much quicker than anyone expected. According to journalist José Félix Díaz, talks are now at an advanced stage, with Konate convinced not to sign an extension in England. The deal, if completed, would be another “free transfer” coup for Florentino’s club. They have a long history of signing stars without spending a fortune.
For now, Eder Militão is set to anchor the defence alongside the youngster Dean Huijsen, while Antonio Rüdiger, David Alaba, and Raul Asencio provide depth. Yet both Rüdiger and Alaba are tipped to leave when their contracts expire next summer, leaving space for Konate to step directly into the starting eleven.
The 26-year old defender has a solid pedigree. In his last season with Liverpool, he averaged more that ten defensive activities per match while also accumulating 30 league starts. Madrid would benefit from his physicality, speed, and composure when he is on the ball.
Real Madrid has quietly and cost-effectively secured its long-term defensive core with the signing of Huijsen (and Konate), without having to spend a fortune.
