Adrien Rabiot’s rollercoaster-year in France is about to take a brutal turn.
The midfielder of 30 years, who left Juventus for Marseille on a free transfer in September last year, has been placed dramatically on the transfer list.
After Friday’s 1-0 loss to Rennes, Rowe and his English teammate Jonathan Rowe had a heated argument. Insiders say tempers erupted in the dressing room. The club deemed their behavior “unacceptable”, and rushed to act to protect OM’s good name.
Barcelona wants Rabiot, and has a plan
Barcelona entered the race when rumors swirled about AC Milan and Juventus. Catalan giants Catalan are said to be preparing to sell 21-year-old defender Marc Casado Rabiot was swapped directly with Hansi Flick, the new coach.
Wolves, West Ham and Casado are all eager to sign the talented youngster to the Premier League.
A win-win situation
This deal may be a good one for Barcelona and OM. Barcelona’s limits in terms of finances have been known for years. A player swap would allow the club to strengthen its midfield, without having to spend money that they do not have.
Marseille, meanwhile, would lose a star but gain a valuable central midfielder who has already played 41 senior matches for Barça, recording one goal and six assists. With Casado valued at €30 million and Rabiot at €25 million, according to Transfermarkt, the exchange could be seen as a win-win for both sides.
Rabiot’s fall in Marseille
Rabiot has seen his stock in Marseille plummet so quickly. Last season, Rabiot was considered one of the team leaders. He scored ten goals, assisted six others, and played a key role in securing Champions League qualifying.
Just a few months ago, he said to the French press “staying at OM was the best thing” in order to demonstrate his commitment. Marseille seems unwilling to tolerate this behaviour. His future may be in Spain.
Losing Rabiot, after such an impressive debut season, would be a bitter blow for Marseille fans. Barcelona may see it as an opportunity to get a proven international player without breaking the bank.
