Marbella Mayor Angeles Muñoz hailed the organisational and sporting success of an “exciting” Davis Cup tie held at the prestigious Puente Romano Tennis Club, which has reinforced the status of the city as a “lucky charm” for the tournament.
The tournament was a success despite Carlos Alcaraz withdrawing from the tournament citing the need for rest. However, parking problems were a problem. Mark Ward, who is a UK resident living in Nueva Andalucia and said “The traffic” was a nightmare. The traffic was a nightmare! We had no choice but to park in central Marbella. But it was worth it. Martinez and Munar were a treat to watch.”
According to Muñoz, Spain achieved a remarkable comeback from a 0-2 deficit for the first time in the competition’s history. The event, which saw Spain triumph over Denmark, generated an economic impact of over €2 million for Marbella.
“Marbella has once again positioned itself at the heart of world tennis and established itself as a benchmark for hosting top-tier international sporting events,” Muñoz stated. She said the event was held in Marbella five times and that it not only helped the local economy to grow, but also promoted tourism. The match took place in ideal weather conditions, with 5,000 spectators at the Puente Romano venue.
Muñoz praised the “epic” Spanish team’s performance and expressed gratitude to the Royal Spanish Tennis Federation (RFET), the Andalusian Regional Government, the municipal Sports Department, and other involved city sectors for their efforts. She concluded that “their work has demonstrated Marbella’s exceptional ability as a host of world-class sporting events.”
