Primark has long been known for its fast fashion offerings. Now, it is diversifying its retail strategy by making a big move into homeware. The company opened its first dedicated homeware store in Great Britain at Trafford Palazzo, Manchester, on August 29, 2015. This new concept represents a direct challenge to established homeware retailers, including IKEA, by offering stylish, budget-friendly alternatives for home furnishing and décor.
Primark Trafford’s Palazzo Store is one of the company’s largest independent homeware outlets. It spans 11,900 sq. feet over two levels. The first Primark homeware store opened in Belfast earlier in 2025. The Manchester store has a variety of products including kitchenware and bedding, bathroom accessories, travel essentials, textiles, as well as other homewares. IKEA has introduced flat-pack options for furniture, which are an affordable alternative. Also, the store offers the “Primark HOME EDIT” collection. This includes high-quality products, such as bedding with 500 thread counts and candles that smell luxurious.
New store will also feature seasonal collections, themed products and other items. Shoppers can choose from a range of items, such as bathroom organisers and slogan cushions. For example, the autumn collection includes pumpkin-inspired décor, aligning with current trends in interior design. The combination of affordability and style is meant to appeal to consumers on a budget who want to have a modern, personalized home.
Primark’s rapid expansion in the UK suggests such stores may appear eventually in other markets. The company operates more than 60 stores throughout Spain, including the recent openings of Madrid and Lorca. Primark’s stores in Spain tend to be central and large, making them ideal locations for the introduction of a homeware concept. Industry observers predict that Primark will open similar stores in Spain, even though no dates have been set. If the Manchester and Belfast sites are successful, they expect to do so. Primark’s move into homeware is a strategic decision that aims to expand its product range and compete with new segments in the retail market. The company’s affordable and stylish home furnishings position it as a direct competitor to established homeware chains. It is likely that the emphasis on value and design will appeal to younger customers and families who are looking for affordable ways to furnish homes without compromising their style.
The move is also in line with broader retail trends, where clothing retailers are expanding into lifestyle products and homewares. Primark’s business model can be strengthened by integrating homeware to encourage repeat customers, cross-category purchases, and brand awareness. Homeware is a key part of the company’s strategy, which includes a carefully curated collection, seasonal updates and combining everyday essentials with premium products. This mix encourages frequent visits, while maintaining customer interest. Primark has established itself as an important player in the homeware industry with the opening of the Trafford Palazzo. Although standalone homeware shops in Spain are not confirmed yet, the success of the UK concept could influence future decisions. The company is poised to have an increased impact on the affordable home furnishings market as it continues to diversify.
