This is the latest beach in Alicante to ban smoking on beaches.
Last summer, Benidorm’s Levante Beach and Poniente beach were restricted.
In 2018, a survey conducted by the European Environment Agency revealed that the most common source of beach contamination was cigarette butts.
The butts are not only a mess, they can also kill marine life when swallowed.
In Spain, there have been many calls for a national ban for years. However, nothing has materialised and the decisions are left up to the local councils.
