Fuengirola police has launched its first set of additional measures to combat road safety along the promenade.
Already underway are the ramping up comprehensive police controls, the reinforcement of road signage and the construction of three new pedestrian footbridges.
The council issued an announcement detailing the intensification of random roadblocks by the local police in various parts of town. The police will not only measure speed but also examine other factors such as alcohol and drug levels, the use of child safety seats, seatbelts, and use of seatbelts.
Likewise, the Road Signalling team has installed new additional information signs on the speed limits of the Paseo Marítimo and other roads in the town, as well as the presence of fixed and mobile radars.
On Wednesday, about 400 vehicles were stopped and checked, of which 18 received fines. They were fined 18 times, 10 for not wearing a seatbelt, 4 for using their mobile phones, 2 for driving scooters in the street and two more for driving an out-of-date ITV.
Fuengirola has seen an increase in police presence in areas other than the city centre, despite the tragedy that occurred on April 4, 2005.
