There have been countless reports of ‘heavy-handed’ boat captains and associates threatening people during crossings between Spain and Africa.

The Guardia believes that Balearic victims also suffered similar fates after disagreements with smugglers.

The police are trying to identify the victims and determine the cause of their death before they can be classified as murders.

Several captains in Spain have been convicted for committing multiple crimes against migrants while on voyages.

Traffickers also cram more and better people on unsuitable vessels to make money.

Balearic Islands president, Marga Prohens, said the body discoveries showed ‘the cruellest side’ of illegal migrant boat journeys.

As of June, this year 32 bodies had been discovered in Balearic water. At least ten times as many deaths were caused by people who died on the way to Africa.
