As you stare at the pumps, do you think: “Does my car really need 95, or should I pay the extra for 98?” It’s okay, you are not alone. Almost every driver has had the same question. We’ll explain it in plain English.

Octane Numbers: What are they really?

Keep it simple. The ‘95′ and ‘98′ are just octane ratings. The rating is a little technical but it really just refers to how well the petrol will resist going bang inside your engine. You want a nice, controlled burn—not a mini explosion. Petrol 98 has a better ability to handle pressure. This is why sporty vehicles need it.

Your engine will expect petrol 95 if you have a regular vehicle (think hatchbacks or small saloons). If you fill up with 98, your car won’t suddenly turn into a Ferrari—it’ll just cost you more. Stick to 98 if your car has a turbo or high compression. You’ll thank your engine for it.

Which one would you recommend? 95 or 98

The answer is simple: follow the instructions in your car’s owner’s manual.

  • If 95 is written, use 95.
  • Don’t take a chance if the engine says 98. You could end up paying a lot of money for repairs and having a faulty engine.

If you are still uncertain, check your sticker or the interior of your fuel cap. You won’t see any difference in fuel economy or performance with 95. Some cars like high-end models, sports cars or turbocharged vehicles may need 98.

What happens when you mix the two or get them wrong?

You can rest assured that nothing will happen if you accidentally mix 95 with 98, or if the “wrong one” is used once or twice. If you mix them together, it just equalizes the octane. So, if your car usually needs 98 and you add a little 95 to top up, don’t panic. Try to use the right stuff again.

What You Should Know don’t Do not put 95 in a vehicle that was designed to take 98. Over time your engine may start to lose power and run poorly. This could lead to expensive repairs. It’s not the end of world if you make a mistake.

Quick Tips at the Pump

  • Your everyday car? You can save money by choosing 95.
  • Do you have a performance or turbo vehicle? Stick to 98.
  • Still unsure? A quick call to the garage, a manual, or fuel cap will solve your problem.

You’ll be prepared the next time you find yourself at a forecourt. If you are still wondering, remember that unless you drive something fancy, Spain’s standard 95 will get you going just fine.
