Over 300 people ‘identified’ over possible criminality during racist riots in Murcia region town

THE Guardia Civil filed 60 reports and identified 300 people as possible criminals in relation to incidents that occurred during Torre Pacheco’s riots between far-right demonstrators and local residents, mainly migrants.

The Government Delegate to Murcia, Mariola Guevara, said she was confident that more arrests will occur ‘over the coming days’.

After three Moroccans assaulted a resident aged 68 a week earlier, the nightly riots began. The Moroccans have been arrested.

GUARDIA CIVIL COORDON

Incendiary social media posts on ‘ultra’ sites called on ‘supporters’ to protest in the town from last Friday though the assailants did not come from Torre Pacheco- an area with a large migrant population.

There were no disturbances on the streets of Wednesday night/Thursday. A small gathering took place outside the Town Hall, but it was not a large one.

Mariola Guevara denounced the harassment and attacks that have been perpetrated against journalists and cameramen, including a crew working for the state broadcaster RTVE.

She added that “these incidents will be pursued vigorously and we hope to make more arrests, as video footage of the attacks is analysed.”

Guevara reported that on Wednesday, the Guardia filed 20 complaints against people for public disorder or possession of dangerous articles. A person wanted for robbery had also been arrested.

GUEVARA & MAYOR ROCA FLANKED BY POLICE CHIEFS

Torre Pacheco mayor, Pedro Angel Roca, described Wednesday night as ‘completely normal’ and expressed his hope that will continue over the next few days.

The Major said that the Guardia Civil Special Security Operation would continue until the weekend, at least.

Angel Roca added, “I think the fear of street disruptions is fading.”

He also spoke about a Wednesday meeting with imams to promote good relations and reinforce social cohesion in the wake of the unrest that began last Friday.

Angel Roca said, “They’ve lived here for 20-30 years and agree that coexistence is always good.”

A march against racism has been announced by political groups, unions and cultural organizations in the Murcia region for Monday.

The route will begin at 8pm, and run between Alfonso X Palace and San Esteban Palace.
