Orange alert for excessive heat in parts of Alicante with ‘equatorial’ nights predicted

The Health Ministry has issued an orange heat warning for Tuesday afternoon, in the Vega Baja area of southern Alicante Province.

The alert comes as the State Meteorological Agency Aemet predicted high temperatures for Bigastro, Redovan, Callosa, Segura, Rafal, Catral, Albatera, and San Isidro.

In the inland, temperatures are expected to be at least 36C.

HEATWAVE CONTINUES

A level of extreme risk regarding forest fires was also issued for the province of Alicante’s south.

In some cities, the nighttime temperature will not fall below 27C. This is not good news for those who want to sleep well.

Those levels come into the higher ‘equatorial’ night category, as opposed to the ‘tropical’ nights endured for over a week.

Heat nights can increase risk for people who are vulnerable and increase energy consumption because of the frequent use of air conditioning.

Alicante’s province experienced unusually high temperatures during June. The average monthly temperature was around 3.5C warmer than normal.

If there is no dramatic change within the next seven days, a new record for June will be broken, surpassing the temperatures recorded in 2022.
