A roasting heatwave is set to sweep across the Costa del Sol on Friday, July 18, with temperatures nearing 40°C as the terral wind arrives, bringing the heat from the centre of the country, according to the Spanish Meteorological Agency (AEMET).
An orange alert for extreme heat has been issued for the Sol region, including Malaga city, and the Guadalhorce Valley, while a yellow alert is in place for the Axarquía region, where temperatures could hit 36°C.
The alerts will remain active from 1pm to 9pm, with the highest temperatures expected to potentially reach 40°C. The Costa del Sol could see low clouds in the morning and fog banks offshore, but the conditions will change around 2pm when the terral winds kick in. On Saturday, the heat will be expected to decrease slightly. However, a yellow alert could still be in effect.
The wind is a key factor in this heatwave. It will change direction to the west with a moderate intensity, sometimes increasing along the coast. On Saturday, the wind will persist, but AEMET anticipates a slight cooling for Sunday, with temperatures reaching 34°C in Malaga city, 35°C in Mijas, and 37°C in the Guadalhorce Valley. The temperatures will rise again on Monday and Sunday, with little relief until Tuesday.
Residents in the region should take precautions and stay hydrated. They are also advised not to do any physical exercise outside, especially during the midday hours.
