Spain’s State Meteorological Agency, AEMET, has issued a Orange Warning for torrential downpours. This calls for the immediate activation regional emergency protocols throughout Malaga province.
The Orange Warning for Rain, which signals a serious risk to the public is scheduled to continue until midnight on Thursday, 6th November. Heavy rains are predicted to hit the Costa del Sol and Guadalhorce Valley as well as the Axarquia area.
Regional government activates flood risk protocol
As a direct response to this increased risk, Junta de Andalucia activated their official Emergency Plan for flood Risk in Andalucia. This has moved the province of Malaga into the pre-emergency stage (Operational Status 0). The activation ensures that all emergency services including 112 Andalucia are coordinated in order to handle any possible incidents. Torremolinos and other local councils have activated municipal emergency plans to prepare themselves for local flooding issues.
Important safety advice released
Authorities urge residents and visitors to be extremely cautious during this severe weather period. Official advice from the regional administration is clear:
- Avoid unnecessary travel during peak rainy periods.
- Drive or move outdoors with extreme caution.
- Listen to the advice and alerts issued by local authorities and 112 Andalucia.
Forecast: Conditions will improve by Thursday
Although the Orange Warning remains in effect until Wednesday night, the weather forecast for Thursday, 6th November, is looking much better. The weather will stabilise rapidly once the Orange Warning ends at midnight.
Thursday’s forecast for Málaga and the Costa del Sol calls for partly sunny skies, with high temperatures reaching highs of 21ºC in parts and a low of 13ºC at night. The chances of rain will drop to 10% during the day. The weekend is predicted to be a time of bliss, with a good chance of rain.
