Opium Beach Club forced to close due to noise and traffic

Opium Beach Club is forced to close because of noise and traffic

The Opium Beach Club at Pinillo Beach, Marbella, will not open in summer 2025. Marbella Council has revoked the operating licence of this club and ordered its dismantling.

After years of complaints and legal battles, the decision was made after residents raised concerns about traffic, noise and safety. The issue was further complicated by the expiration a road authority permit.

The club was closed after residents from the neighbourhoods of Lindasol, El Real Panorama and surrounding areas filed administrative legal actions to protest its operations. The council formalised its decision in a decret citing an expired provisional permit required by the Directorate General of Traffic for the club’s initial license. The decree requires the cessation of all operations, and the removal of any temporary structures without compensation. It is likely that many people who have driven on the A-7 have seen the iconic giant drink cans advertising the club.

Opium Beach Club closed due to excessive noise and traffic

The club’s problems date back many years. The complaints of residents peaked in 2022 when a shooting occurred at the venue. Residents have repeatedly complained about excessive noise, traffic jams, and safety concerns. Some even displayed banners demanding the right to peace and security. Opium was first denied a license by the council in November 2022. However, in 2023 it managed to obtain new permits, including an environmental clearance and installation license. This led to a temporary opening in July 2024. However, for a short time the club was open without any proper permission before being shut down again. Residents fought the new permits in the courts and led to this latest revocation.

The council claims that the license was not revoked because of resident pressure, but because it expired in December 2024 and the club had failed to renew its road permit. The council’s spokesperson said that the court rulings so far have supported their action.

Adding to the controversy, Opium was a sponsor of a race car driven by Cristian Broberg Muñoz, son of Marbella’s mayor, Ángeles Muñoz. Residents are continuing to pursue criminal charges against the club through Marbella’s court system.

Although the legal proceedings are ongoing, the closure of Opium Beach Club is a major victory for the local community.
