JOINT pain, stiffness, fatigue, and loss of mobility are symptoms that millions of people tend to attribute to aging – but in many cases, they mask underlying rheumatic diseases.
According to the EPISER Study by the Spanish Society of Rheumatology (SSR), one out of four adults in Spain suffers from rheumatic conditions, making it one of the most common causes of disability in adults.
In response, Hospital Quirónsalud Marbella has created a new Rheumatology Unit It is headed by Dr. Nerea Costas-Torrijo with the aim of providing specialized diagnoses and treatments for patients throughout the Costa del Sol.
In this densely-populated area, a Rheumatology unit was not available. Our center now offers comprehensive care for rheumatic disease, with the goal of improving patient’s health and quality-of-life close to home without requiring lengthy journeys, explained Dr. Costas.
Joint health is a key specialty
The new unit will be able to treat chronic conditions as well as acute episodes of inflammation or joint pain.
“The most common rheumatic disorders include osteoarthritis as well soft-tissue conditions such as tendinitis, bursitis and osteoporosis.” Then, Dr. Costas pointed out that the different forms of arthritis follow. Gout and rheumatoid are the two most common.
She stated that rheumatology was becoming increasingly interdiscipline: “Close cooperation with other services is important, as musculoskeletal disease often affects other organs like the skin. Gynecology is especially important in coordination of some conditions such as osteoporosis which are closely related to menopause. We work closely with Rehabilitation when conservative treatment is needed and with Traumatology if surgery is necessary”.
The unit provides diagnostic services and offers treatments that are tailored to each type rheumatic disorder, with therapies adjusted according to severity.
With this new unit – also staffed by Dr. Pablo Manzano and Dr. Cynthia León – Hospital Quirónsalud Marbella reinforces its commitment to specialized and comprehensive care for patients with rheumatic diseases, improving quality of life and reducing the need for travel across the Costa del Sol.
