The image of the biker – dirty, greasy, out for no good, has changed remarkably since the days of the Hell’s Angels in the 60s. Bikers today are hailed as noisy heroes and a force for good.
Our very own Costa del Sol heroic biker, Esther Adán, the Nomad Biker from Marbella, is in the running for a prize recognising her amazing adventure to collect donated hearing aids, getting them reconditioned, and taking them halfway around the world for children in a rural deaf school in Vietnam.
In Vietnam, deaf children are often largely left as lost causes, never to enjoy and fully use the fifth sense – hearing.
Nomad Biker knows her calling as a Vietnam biker
Esther says, ‘The hearing aid collection campaign was born after my first solo motorcycle trip through Vietnam in January 2024, where I came across a school for deaf children that deeply moved me. Isabel Puig the Biker grandmother suggested to me that I collect used hearing devices to help these deaf children on my return to Spain. Alicia Sornosa then expanded the scope of this campaign by bringing in media support.
Esther was deaf from childhood but never let that stop her. She learned to speak English so well she became a teacher in England. Esther could not and wouldn’t accept the idea that these children were being given up as unable to fulfill their social potential due to a deficit in one of their five senses.
‘The biker world in Spain turned to this cause and its call to action in a heartbeat, with many offering to collect what they affectionately named ‘Tamagotchis’ from numerous parts of Spain. Even foreign bikers responded to the call.
This led to a surge of support from bikers, as well as companies like Audika who donated, and Alejandro, who worked for Salud Auditiva, Burgos, who prepared and recycled the hearing devices.
Biker dangers in Vietnam – deaf children await their new hearing aids
Esther traveled on a motorbike across the country, often on treacherous roads, in January 2025 to get the donated devices fitted to some children. She gave them the gift of sound, the ability to speak, and more opportunities to integrate into society.
This experience has transformed many lives and shown the immense power of community. It has also shown the impact we can create when we work together to achieve a goal.
The jury is made up of 150 people, and at least 100 must be connected with the worlds or tourism, communication, motorcycling, industry and other organisations. The Mototourism Awards Gala will reveal the results only when they open the envelopes in each category.
The winner will announced at the Encuentro de Grandes Viajeros de Moto Turismo event in April. Nomad Biker Esther, we are all cheering you on from the Costa del Sol! We are ready for the next campaign!
