Real Madrid have reached a contract agreement with the 21-year-old forward dubbed the ‘new wonderkid’.

Gonzalo GarcíaOne of the biggest stars in their recent FIFA Club World Cup campaign has now secured a long-term future with the Santiago Bernabeu. Real Madrid, according to Spanish press reports, is set to sign him up as a first team player for 2025/26.

Castilla’s graduate was on the radar of English, Italian and Spanish clubs after he lit up the Club World Cup by scoring four goals and providing an assist in just six matches. The four goals and an assist in six games earned him the Golden Boot of the Club World cup. These numbers are not bad at all for a player who was barely involved with the senior squad until this summer.

The fantastic rise of Gonzalo García

Gonzalo was born in 2004 and joined Real Madrid’s academy in 2014. He quietly rose up the ranks. The goal he scored in the Copa del Rey Quarter-Final win against Leganes in February last year gave a hint of what was ahead. Few would have predicted his success this summer.

He was selected for Xabi’s Club World Cup team and he not only held his own but he dominated it. His pace, poise, and clinical finishing made him a household name, even among ex-coach Carlo Ancelotti.

Now, he’s set to compete with none other than Kylian Mbappé for the striker spot.

He is eyeing up the number 9 shirt.

Gonzalo García It is reported that Mbappe wants to take over the number nine shirt, which was previously vacated Mbappe. Mbappe has switched to the iconic number 10, as he inherits Luka’s symbolism.

Madrid’s strategy is clear: Mbappe leads, Gonzalo follows. But the club views him as much more than a mere benchwarmer. It wants him to develop and be ready.

New deal details

The new deal includes a significant pay raise for García, an extended contract beyond his current two years, and a much heftier release clause, up from €50 million to an undisclosed figure. Club president Florentino Pérez sees him as part of Madrid’s next-gen spine.

COPE reports that Gonzalo is expected to be unveiled in August as a member of the first team squad, and Xabi Xalonso has high expectations for him. Gonzalo is already training with the senior squad at Valdebebas and all signs point to him making his debut in 2025/26.

  • €8 million is Gonzalo García’s market value, according to Transfermarkt.
  • The Madrid-born player has played 10 times for Spain’s U19 National team.
