New car number plates are appearing across Spain this month – here’s what they actually mean

If you saw a Spanish car recently with a strange combination of letters, it’s not your imagination. Since 1 July 2026 a new series of registration letters have appeared on all newly registered cars across the country.

This change has raised many questions on the internet. Some drivers have asked if the new plates are a sign of a law change or if existing vehicles need to be replaced with their registration plates.

Answer: It’s much easier than you think.

Why Spain’s number plate is changing

Spain’s current registration scheme has been in effect since 2000. The number plates of today are made up of four letters and three numbers, as opposed to the old provincial system. They are assigned chronologically across the country.

This means that a vehicle registered at Madrid will follow the exact same sequence as a car registered in Seville or Valencia.

As the registrations continue, the letter combinations available gradually diminish.

DGT starts the next sequence as soon as the first one is finished. This is exactly what happened in July.

The new registrations, which reflect the next step in the Spanish national numbering system, will be visible to drivers.

It is important to note that the format has not changed. The format is still the same: four numbers, followed by three letters. There are no additional symbols, colors or regional identifiers.

Who is affected by the new registration series?

Many drivers can relax here. If you registered your vehicle before July 1, 2026, there are no changes.

It is not necessary to replace the registration plate. You don’t need to update your documents. You do not have to contact DGT.

The new series of letters is applicable only to vehicles registered after the first week of July. It includes new cars, motorbikes and all other vehicles that are entering the registration system.

All else is the same as it was before. The introduction of a brand new letter combination in Spain’s registration system is part of its normal lifecycle.

What every driver needs to know

The DGT reminds motorists that one rule never changes, even though the new series doesn’t create any new duties.

The plates cannot be altered or covered in any way to make identification difficult. It is important to replace plates that have become worn or damaged as soon they become hard to read.
