Food safety has entered a new era. In 2025, the BS ISO 22002 series received its most significant update yet – introducing stricter standards for restaurants, retailers, packaging, and transport.
These changes aim to reduce the risk of contamination, fraud and hygiene failures. Both residents and tourists can be affected by these issues when eating out in Europe and beyond.
What are the new BSI Food Safety Standards?
The ISO 22002 Series builds on the ISO 22000 Framework, which has been used for more than 36,000 sites certified worldwide to ensure food safety.
The new package includes seven standards—five fully revised and two brand new:
- BS ISO 22002-1:2025 (Food manufacturing) – stricter controls for food production facilities.
- BS ISO 22002-2:2025 (Catering) – updated rules for restaurants, cafés, hotels, and catering businesses.
- BS ISO 22002-4:2025 (Food packaging manufacturing) – revised requirements for safe packaging production.
- BS ISO 22002-5:2025 (Transport and storage) – improved safeguards for warehouses and food delivery.
- BS ISO 22002-6:2025 (Feed and animal food production) – updated rules for livestock and feed manufacturers.
- BS ISO 22002-7:2025 (Retail and wholesale) – a brand-new standard for supermarkets, wholesalers, food banks, and other consumer-facing outlets.
- BS ISO 22002-100:2025 – a universal framework consolidating hygiene rules across the food, feed, and packaging supply chain.
Five of these standards have been upgraded from technical specification (ISO/TS to ISO/IS), reflecting the global consensus. This gives businesses stronger international recognition.
Together, these standards create a modular and sector-specific approach for hygiene, allergen control, traceability, fraud prevention, and more.
What this means for restaurant and retail owners in Europe
Restaurant owners and food retailers can expect:
- Stricter hygiene monitoring – from kitchen cleaning schedules to staff training.
- Supply chain accountability – businesses must prove safer handling and storage at every stage.
- Cost implications – investments may be needed in new equipment, staff certification, and compliance checks.
- Competitive edge – those adopting ISO certification may find it easier to attract international customers who value recognised safety standards.
According to the British Standards Institution, the revision aligns also with the latest Codex Alimentarius guidelines, keeping European business ahead of future regulatory change.
When shopping for food and dining, residents and tourists alike should be aware of the following:
- Menus and packaging should include clearer information about allergens.
- Food labelling should be improved to reduce fraud and misrepresentation.
- Safer dining experiences in restaurants, cafés, and hotels adopting ISO practices.
- Retail food outlets, such as supermarkets and markets for food, are now more trusted.
These standards will provide greater peace-of-mind when you dine out or shop in your local supermarket. The standards will also protect Europe’s gastronomy tourism industry. This is important in countries like Spain France and Italy.
By 2025, it is expected that restaurants, retailers and food service businesses will begin to align with the ISO 22002 series.
