Benalmadena Council plans to create 34 allotments in the Nueva Torrequebrada Urbanisation located between Calle Javea, and Calle Poseidon.
The project, with an investment of over €200,000, hopes to address a long-standing demand from residents, according to the council.
Mayor Juan Antonio Lara explained that the initiative is important. He said, “Over the past years, previous governments considered and even announced several locations for urban plots, but none were realized.” The project has entered the tendering phase and a company will manage the land. A second plot is also planned in Al-Baytar Park where construction already began.
The council has outlined its plans, which include clearing the land and leveling it, building paths and replacing the soil with one that is suitable for growing fruits and vegetables. Toilets, a shaded storage area, irrigation and water supply networks, and drainage systems will be included on the site.
A landscaped area will be included, as well as a pedestrian crosswalk, parking for people who have reduced mobility and a designated space to prune and clear waste. The project should be completed in 60 days. Residents of Benalmadena will then have access to the urban gardens. This will promote sustainability, community involvement, and self sufficiency.
Allotment applications can be submitted at the Benalmadena Town Hall, Avenida Juan Luis Peralta 20. A date has yet to be set for when the process will begin.
