Murcia police shut down the first known illegal opium plantation in Spain


The police have arrested two men and dismantled Spain’s first illegal opium plantation.

Two brothers were operating the business in Cartagena, Murcia.

Los Caballeros Farm covers approximately 3,000 m2, and the Policia Nacional says they discovered the clandestine operation at its infancy.

The authorities believe that the crop would have grown to 120,000 plants if the entire land had been cultivated.

You can also find out more about the following: La Verdad Newspapers reported that the discovery of mass illegal opium cultivation in the country surprised police.

They were able to report their findings to the Department of Health who does not have an opium protocol.

Investigators think the plantation wasn’t just for heroin production, but was also used to produce synthetic drugs and poppy seeds in large quantities.

The legal opium crop in Spain is managed by one licensed company.

It operates more than 6,000 hectares in Castilla La Mancha and Castilla y Leon.
