Multi-storey car park planned for Bulevar de La Cala de Mijas: Relief or eyesore?

A new multi-storey, above-ground car park is about to transform the landscape of La Cala de Mijas. It will be located along the Bulevar de La Cala. Will the new car park be a relief for residents or an eyesore to them?

The facility is a good example. one of three new parking projects Recently announced by the Council, will provide nearly 600 parking spaces over two levels and spread out across almost 9,000 square meters. This project in La Cala is designed to be above ground, unlike the underground parking that was planned for Las Lagunas. It’s easier and faster to build.

Precise location not confirmed – just “El Bulevar”

While the exact plot has not yet been publicly confirmed – as the projects are still in the early stage of drafting construction designs – it is widely expected that the car park will be developed on a currently makeshift parking area adjacent to the sharp curve on the A-7 motorway, near the road tunnel providing access to the Mercadona supermarket. Its central location puts it in the middle of La Cala. Beachgoers, local businesses, and shoppers will all benefit from the convenience. However, the area is more crowded in summer.

The announcement is part of Mijas’ ambitious parking strategy which aims at creating around 4,000 spaces in the entire town. The La Cala facility, along with underground parking in La Vega (approximately 480 spaces) and another in Las Cañadas (around 280 spaces), will add over 1,000 spaces in total from these three projects alone.

Architectural designs still to be drawn

The tender for drafting the detailed construction projects, with a combined budget of around €376,000 for technical studies, was launched on 19 December.

The construction timelines are still tentative, but based on similar council projects, they could start in 2026 or 2027 after project approval and contracting. They could be completed by 2028 or 2030, depending on how the awarding process works and if there are any design changes.

Local residents have long complained of parking pressures during tourist peak seasons. The new car park above-ground in La Cala will ease some congestion and support the town’s beachfront businesses and shopping area.

In the months to come, as the architects are chosen and designs are finalised, there will be more details such as potential renderings and exact site plan.
