More than 16,000 women across Almería province will be offered breast cancer screenings over the next two years, thanks to the launch of a mobile mammography unit by the Andalusian Health Service (SAS). The unit began its journey on June 24 in Serón and will continue to visit 18 municipalities including: Vélez Rubio, Huércal-Overa, and Pulpí until May 4, 2026.
This initiative is part Andalusia’s Early Detection Program of Breast Cancer and is aimed at women aged between 49 and 71. Participants who are eligible will be notified of their appointment via SMS or post. The mobile unit has the capacity to perform up to 100 mammograms each day. The results are automatically integrated into every patient’s record. If further investigation is required, hospital referrals and follow-up appointments will be made.
Women in less-accessible areas may find it difficult to attend routine screenings. Early detection of breast cancer is crucial to the fight against it, as it improves survival rates and treatment outcomes.
Local healthcare professionals and residents have praised the initiative for its convenience, but also because it has helped remove economic and logistical barriers to screenings that are essential. The SAS’s commitment to women’s and preventive health is reinforced by bringing diagnostic services to the community. Women who qualify but haven’t been notified are encouraged contact their local clinic for more information.
This proactive approach to breast cancer screening could save countless women’s lives. It also highlights the importance for women to be able to access early and accessible detection.
