Double police presence for summer in Mijas

Mijas will have double the police force this summer

Mijas Council is launching a major summer security campaign by doubling the number of police officers on its streets between July and September.

Plan to address significant population growth during holiday season and ensure safety in all urban areas.

The plan was unveiled by Mayor Ana Mata along with the Local Police Councillor Juan Carlos Cuevas. Chief Inspector Juan Manuel Rosas also attended the unveiling to explain its role and how it will help residents and tourists. Mata said, “Security has to be a priority, and this increased deployment will mean more prevention, greater control, as well as peace of mind for all.” The additional personnel will increase surveillance in the afternoons, at night, and during large-scale events. They will also intensify patrols and conduct more frequent checks to prevent crimes.

Cuevas stated that the plan is more than just adding officers. “Doubling the police presence allows faster response times, better checks on cars, more effective deterrence of unsocial behaviour and targeted surveillance at specific times and places,” explained Cuevas. As well, the local police’s cycling unit has been reactivated for the summer, patrolling the coastal walkway daily between El Torreón and Luna Beach in Calahonda. Cuevas explained that this unit was able to provide agility, constant presence and deterrents against possible crimes or inappropriate behaviour.

He stressed the importance of officers assisting the public. “We are committed to ensuring that residents and visitors feel safe and supported, whether they’re dealing with incidents or giving information about the beaches.”

The mayor, councillor and chief inspector called on everyone to show courtesy and respect so that we can all enjoy a peaceful summer of harmony and enjoyment.
