The Mijas city hall announced plans to construct a new park for working donkeys. The project is designed to improve animal welfare through the provision of a space dedicated to resting, shading and water.
The park is located near existing donkey stables at Mijas Pueblo. It will include open spaces, drinking fountains, and shaded areas where animals can roam more freely while not working. The goal is for the animals to be better looked after while still maintaining their charm as a part of the traditional town.
The town hall announced the initiative at a press event this morning. It said that the initiative is part of a larger movement towards ethical and sustainable tourism in the region. Amaya Isert and other local animal rights activists were in attendance. Amaya runs Donkey DreamlandShe founded a sanctuary in the hills of La Cala about 12 miles away from Mijas Pueblo, five years ago. She has been a long-time supporter of efforts to improve working conditions for donkeys.
Residents and animal-rights groups have been very supportive of the project. The project is still awaiting approval and construction may begin as early as this year.
The park, if completed, would allow both visitors and locals to experience one of Mijas’s most iconic traditions in a more responsible manner. Tourists would have a chance to learn more about the history and culture of Mijas while also supporting responsible tourism.
