Mijas, a town in Spain’s Costa del Sol, was transformed on Saturday into a bustling equestrian centre as it hosted the 9th edition of its much-loved Ruta ecuestre.
This year’s event saw more than 300 horses take part—surpassing last year’s record—and brought together a colourful crowd of riders, locals and holidaymakers for a day full of tradition, sunshine and shared joy.
The route started at El Esparragal before winding through the spring countryside to reach the beach. The horses trotted and even splashed the water into the sea. It was a spectacular scene, which had beachgoers cheering, clapping, and snapping pictures.
Mijas equestrian festival draws record crowds
Eloy Bellmonte, the councillor for Livestock was beaming all day. “Once again Mijas has proven how proud of its tradition it is and how we can bring people together,” said Eloy Belmonte. He also pointed out the event’s increasing popularity and noted how it had become a date that equestrian lovers across the province could not miss.
It wasn’t all about the horses. Parque de Los Olivos continued the fun with a paella giant and live music. Children danced while adults exchanged stories. The atmosphere in the park was electrifying.
Local teams deliver flawless celebration
Belmonte also made sure to shout out the people who made it all run smoothly—from the Local Police and Civil Protection teams to volunteers and workers from the town’s beaches, festivities and operational services. He said, “It is thanks to them all that the day ran smoothly.”
What began as a local custom has become an important date in the cultural calendar of Costa del Sol. And as horses galloped along the sand and the music played into the evening, it was clear: the Ruta Ecuestre isn’t just an event—it’s a reflection of Mijas itself. Welcoming and vibrant with a lot to offer.
