Mijas Mayor Ana Mata and local councillor Juan Carlos Cuevas presented the new uniforms and vests for local police, which is a significant improvement in their resources.
During the ceremony, Mayor Mata announced that the 2025 budget for the local police has been increased to almost €1.5 million, a 200 per cent increase.
The huge investment comes from a recent budget adjustment that allocated over €779 thousand, including €385 thousand in extraordinary extra credits and €393 thousand in supplementary credits. These funds were used to purchase advanced equipment such as bodycams, breathalyzers, speed cameras and surveillance drones. They also upgraded the shooting range of the police. Additional funds will be allocated to support the maintenance of security systems within municipal buildings.
Increase in police spending is the largest in 5 years
Mayor Mata declared, “This is our largest investment in local police in the last five years and shows our commitment to a vital security force,” Mayor Mata. “We’re allocating €150,000 solely for uniforms, which shows the scale of our efforts.”
Cuevas emphasized the strategic approach that was behind the upgrades. He said, “This investment is a reflection of serious, forward-thinking government, and not makeshift solution.” Mijas’ residents need officers who are well-equipped with the latest, most effective tools. The force has been underfunded for too long.”
The improvements are expected to boost Mijas local police’s operational capability, allowing them to better protect the public and deter criminals from migrating to other municipalities.
