Mercadona expands in Portugal with new jobs paying almost €4,900

Mercadona is pressing ahead with its expansion in Portugal, offering hundreds of new jobs with some salaries reaching nearly €4,900 gross per month.

The Spanish supermarket giant has also unveiled a €290 million logistics hub and continues to open new stores across the country.

Mercadona offers legal jobs with high salaries

NIT states that the best-paid vacancies are currently being advertised by Mercadona. They include positions for labour lawyers who have a bachelor’s degree in labor and social security laws and sector experience. The role offers a permanent contract, a gross annual salary ranging from €45,637 to €69,280, plus allowances and annual bonuses.

There are other positions such as financial analysts, cashflow managers, maintenance assistants, and refrigeration technicians. The website lists all vacancies. Mercadona Portugal’s LinkedIn page.

This October, Mercadona will be opening a new supermarket in Matosinhos.

Mercadona will open its latest Portuguese store on October 9 in São Gens, Matosinhos, at 3867 Rua de São Gens, with a sales area of 1,900 m². As Food Retail The opening of the new facility will result in 65 local permanent jobs.

The new branch features wide aisles with the usual Mercadona section including fruit and vegetables and ready-to -eat meals. The chain has highlighted the addition of energy-saving devices and tools to encourage collaboration among employees.

Mercadona operates supermarkets already in Lisbon, Porto and Loures. It also has stores in Penafiel, Fafe Leiria, Palmela.

€290 million Mercadona logistics centre in Almeirim

Alongside store openings, Mercadona has just inaugurated its largest logistics centre to date in Almeirim, representing a €290 million investment. The 120,000 m² facility, which began construction in 2022, serves all 63 Mercadona stores currently operating in Portugal.

The logistics hub has created 630 permanent jobs, with €7.2 million invested in training new hires. According to Mercadona’s official statementThe centre is equipped 8,700 panels of solar energy that provides 25 per cent, with a water recycling system that saves 90,000. litres of water daily and a system to collect rainwater for local ecosystem protection.

Manuel Castro Almeida of the Portuguese Ministry of Finance praised the Almeirim project during a visit. He said, “Investments are welcome as they enable modernisation and value creation for the region.”

Pedro Miguel Ribeiro the Mayor of Almeirim described the event as “historic for our municipality” and added that “Mercadona has now become the largest employer in the municipality.”

Mercadona’s rapid expansion creates stable employment and strengthens supply chains. But it also raises some questions. Can a foreign-owned retail chain dominating the Portuguese marketplace be considered a positive story for local communities? Or is it a danger to smaller retailers that are struggling to compete with them?
