Golf has been one of the most important gifts I have received from my Mediterranean travels. Credit: Miguel Franco
When you stroll through any Mediterranean city in the morning you will notice something: People are not in a hurry or stressed. And they are not wearing gym clothes.
They walk to the baker.
The market is a short walk away.
You walk to meet someone.
Some people simply walk outside because it’s nice and sunny.
One of the most important secrets of Mediterranean health is:
Everyday movement is not seen as punishment or obligation, but rather woven into the fabric of life.
Many people think that fitness requires gyms and strict routines. But across Mediterranean cultures, from Spain to Italy, Greece, France and even across the Middle Eastern coast people stay fit in a completely different way.
They move in a natural way. All day. Every day.
This rhythm is more powerful than any exercise plan.
One thing became clear after I reversed my type 2 diabetes over three years ago, and delved deep into the Mediterranean way of life:
To be healthy, it’s not necessary to join a gym. It is enough to do natural movements that fit into your daily life.
What the Mediterranean movement looks like
Walking after meals
It is one of the best habits to improve digestion, control blood sugar levels and lose excess weight.
Use your body all day
Stairs. Carrying groceries Housework. Gardening. Walking to the shop.
These little movements will keep your metabolism going all day.
Enjoying the outdoors as much as you can
The sun resets hormones. Fresh air relaxes the brain. Nature reduces stress.
Mediterranean living is a lifestyle that embraces all of this.
Social movement is important
Walking together is a common activity. Not pressure, but movement.
There is no sin
No “I must”, “I should”, or “I ought to”
Natural activity done with ease.
Enjoying movement can also bring joy: My golf story
Golf has been one of the most important gifts I have received from my Mediterranean travels.
Not as a sport… but as therapy.
As I walk along the course, in the early or late morning, surrounded with mountains, trees and quiet, something within me is reset.
I love golf because:
- sunlight
- Nature
- Slow and steady movement
- mental calm
My body and mind feel alive when I’m in this place.
Stress melts away here.
You can only do this when your movement is natural, joyful and not forced.
Golf is a great way to learn about the Mediterranean culture.
Nature, movement and peace.
Here’s something that many readers may not know:

Why this is better than the gym
We are not designed to sit down for ten hours, then do a 30 minute exercise.
Mediterranean people move all dayThe.
- blood sugar steady
- Metabolism active
- stress hormones low
- The heart and joints are strong
- Weight Balance
Many people in the Mediterranean stay active and mobile into their 80s and 90s.
