Mazda CX-30 – class, quality and understated style

Mazda is a brand that many drivers are unaware of, despite the MX-5 being synonymous with Mazda.  Motoring journalists are often asked about the cars they recommend. When Mazda is mentioned, there is always a surprised look. Mazdas have always been well-built and a joy to drive, which is something that many of their rivals lack.

Their understated style may account for why they are not at the forefront of many people’s mind, it’s a brand that exemplifies the motto, ‘if you know, you know’. SUVs continue to be the most popular vehicles on the road, and we are focusing our attention on the CX30 in this review. As with all Mazda models the CX30 is a quality build and there are five trim levels with prices starting from €32,031/£27,300 for the lead-in Prime-Line version.

Standard equipment on this entry to range includes air conditioning, power fold heated door mirrors, Bluetooth, Apple Car Play and Android Auto, rear parking sensors and camera, radar cruise control, auto lights and wipers and the usual array of ‘advanced driver assistance features’. Mazda has a clever solution to temporarily disable many features.

There are two power options with either automatic or manual gears. The Skyactiv G 2.5 litre petrol engine with 140PS front-wheel drive or the Skyactiv X 2.0 litre petrol with 186PS and the option of All-Wheel-Drive. Both petrol engines have mild hybrid assistance and are available in either a 6-speed manual transmission or an automatic.

Mazda’s CX-30 is a welcome respite from the touchscreen madness that has gripped the entire car industry. The rotary control and buttons are intuitive, making them a great alternative to the touchscreen craze. The controls and switches are easy to operate, and it’s a pleasant place to travel. Its notable quality is a far cry from its rivals and feels more expensive than the price suggests.

The CX-30 handles well, and is surprising enjoyable on twisting routes across the country. The CX-30 is a smooth and refined drive with many creature comforts.

The CX-30 is a stylish car without the brutalism of many other designs. The CX-30 is a great choice if you are looking for quality, style and class at an affordable price.
