Marbella has started counting down until the IRONMAN World Championship takes place between November 8-9. The Costa del Sol, which is the world’s ground zero for triathlons, will host the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship between November 8 and 9.
Like in 2024, this event will boost the city’s international profile and make it a great host for global sporting events.
Over 7,000 athletes from around the world are expected to participate, who will be joined by an estimated 20,000 to 30,000 visitors, injecting approximately €60 million into the local economy. The competition’s media exposure is predicted to exceed €16 million, showing what a global reach it has.
Marbella is ready for Ironman Showdown
Lisandro Vieytes is the Sports Councillor for Marbella. He stated that the city was ready to host a sporting event of this size. Over 3,000 people will be involved in the championship, including volunteers, technical teams and organisers.
More than 130 police officers from the Guardia Civil will be on duty every day to provide security, along with other emergency services, Civil Protection and the National Police. Neighbouring towns, including Cártama, Coín, Monda, and Ojén, will assist with coordination, as the race route extends through their territories as well. Marbella is undergoing a radical transformation to manage the influx. Four to five suspended structures will be built, including bridges and walkways. Some of these structures will span the A-7, allowing participants and spectators to safely cross.
Ironman Village and Visitor Centre to Open This Year
Ironman Village is a central 5,000-square metre point, with a display area of 3,000 square metres, that will serve as the focal point for visitors. To improve accessibility and comfort, 18,000 sqm of plastic flooring will be laid on sand areas. The Finca La Caridad in San Pedro Alcántara will host a massive 115-metre-long, 50-metre-wide tent for the opening and closing ceremonies, while Puerto Banús’ Plaza Antonio Banderas will feature a flag parade, a 5-kilometre fun run, and the Ironkids race, bringing in families and the community.
To minimize disruptions, an extensive information campaign detailing road closures and restrictions on traffic will be launched one month before the event. This will use digital panels as well as official municipal channels. Departments like Tourism, Security, and Public Works work together to make sure Marbella is a top-notch sporting destination.
Over 150 vehicles, 5,500 cones and concrete barriers were deployed, along with 4,000 fences. After the San Pedro Alcántara fair, the setup will begin immediately, lighting the fuse on a whirlwind week of preparations. This now-annual championship will be a landmark in Marbella’s history, demonstrating its position as an international sports destination. It will also leave a lasting cultural and economic legacy.
