Marbella just took a major step towards the building of a new stadium, as the city council rejected attempts to stop the construction.

Spokesman of the local Executive, Félix Romero, announced the Local Government Board decision, stressing that the plan, with an investment of €114 million, is a priority to provide the city with facilities according to its needs.

The project should be awarded within a few months. From the time the first brick is laid, the execution period will last two years.

Romero continued, pointing out that after a contest to determine the best architect was held, the Marbella FC Foundation was chosen to manage the project. Seven objections have been raised, but they were all dismissed. The demolition of the old stadium should begin this summer.

Marbella Council established a criteria for evaluating events that favors the organization of events, promotion of sport clinics for youth and availability of the stadium to municipal activities.

The project will transform Marbella’s sporting infrastructure. It will be built on a 45,000-square-metre plot and include a stadium that can accommodate 10,000 spectators. There will also be 2,500 square meters of shops and 84 rooms to house visiting teams.
