Marbella Council launched a campaign of citizen awareness to increase compliance with the municipal coexistence ordinance for 2019. The campaign is designed to encourage civic behaviour and preserve Marbella’s positive reputation, particularly during the peak tourist season. The message is: “Just don’t lack any respect.”
This campaign, which runs until 15 August, is timed to coincide with peak tourist season when cultural differences may cause tensions among locals and tourists. This campaign is promoted on multiple platforms such as bus stops, hotels, tourism offices and digital screens.
The campaign focuses on the need to adhere to 2019 regulations in order to maintain harmony within Marbella’s open spaces. The campaign is backed by a collaboration between Tourism and Commerce to ensure a smooth rollout.
There are a number of key rules, including noise restrictions at home and in public, prohibitions against consuming alcohol or drugs in public, adhering to designated collection times and places, prohibiting cycling or scooters from being used on pedestrian walkways, and restricting unauthorised street performances or illegal vending such as “looky-looky sales” or buskers.
Violations may incur fines ranging from €300 to €3,000, with parents or guardians held accountable for offences by kids under 18. This campaign promotes public decorum by addressing behaviors such as walking shirtless, engaging with indecent acts or public urination which are explicitly prohibited. According to the city council, since the ordinance has been introduced, the number of such behaviors has decreased dramatically. This is due in part to increased awareness.
Marbella is a city that has a population of over a million people. Disrespectful visitors disrupt the daily lives of locals who live there all year round. The campaign’s goal is to ensure that everyone feels welcome and encourage mutual respect.
