Easter holidays are synonymous with Marbella, a bustling coastline bursting with locals and visitors eager to enjoy the sun and relax.
Marbella has just a few days before the masses arrive to make sure its beaches are in tip-top shape. A team of 67 dedicated people and more than 20 heavy duty machines are working hard to clean up the sand. They also remove debris like cane and algae.
Marbella beach cleanup impacted by increased storm activity
Diego López, the city councillor leading these efforts, recently stopped by El Cable beach to see how things are progressing. He noted that recent storms have caused significant damage, especially in favourite spots such as Casablanca, Fontanilla, Alicate, Las Chapas, La Víbora, Pinillo, and Cabopino.
“The storms seem stronger every year, so we’ve had to step up our game,” López said. We are working quickly to ensure that everything is clean and comfortable before Easter.
Marbella’s beaches are boosted by heavy machinery and improvements to facilities
The city uses powerful equipment to handle the work load, including excavators and loaders, tractors and machines that clean the sand daily. The city is delivering new sand to the beaches, as well as installing showers, foot-washing stations, wooden walkways and other amenities.
Keeping the beaches spotless costs Marbella around €4 million each year. Recently, local authorities unanimously requested that Spain’s government reinvest the €2.6 million it earns annually from coastal businesses directly into Marbella’s beach maintenance.
Looking ahead, López emphasized the need for ongoing and sustainable efforts to protect the coastline. He urged the authorities to regularly replenish the sand on offshore banks and speed up installation of submerged breakwaters in order to guard against storms.
“We have the right people on the job, ready to handle whatever comes,” López assured. With continued support, Marbella beaches will remain beautiful and welcoming for many years to come.
