Marbella will open its 2026 sports calendar by hosting the 16th edition of the European junior waterpolo tournament, ‘Tewam’, from January 2 to 5. The four-day tournament will be held in the Antonio Serrano Lima Municipal Pool and 120 young athletes representing 12 teams from Spain Portugal and Morocco will compete.

An important event for youth sports

The tournament is a major event for young athletes. It was organized by Club Waterpolo Marbella, with support from the municipal sports department. Lisandro Vieytes, a councillor in Marbella, explained that this competition is “good for both the technical and personal development of young players” while providing them with a platform to gain international experience. After nearly €3 million was invested in modernising the pool complex, the tournament returns to its usual January slot. The upgrades have created an environment that is modern, comfortable and accessible for both spectators and participants,” Vieytes said.

Participation of international participants and impact on the community

Families from Spain, Portugal, Morocco and other countries will be welcomed to the event, which is expected to bring an influx of tourists at a time when tourism is quieter. It helps to support the local economies while also highlighting Marbella’s capacity to host major international sporting events. The city council will ensure smooth operation by providing ambulance coverage, shuttle buses free for team transportation, and logistical support throughout the four-day event.

New Features and Special Guests

Carlos Rodríguez, vice-president of Club Waterpolo Marbella, highlighted several new features for this edition. The most awaited event is the motivational speech by Spanish Olympic and World waterpolo champion Laura Ester entitled “Born in Water, Becoming a World Champion.” Rodríguez also noted that young athletes and their families will be able to participate in guided tours of the city and specialist training sessions, offering educational and practical experiences alongside the competition.

A platform for young talent

The Tewam Junior Tournament has been running for more than 15 year and continues to attract waterpolo teams from around the world. This tournament gives young players the chance to compete on a high-level. This event is not only a way to promote sports, but it also gives families the opportunity to interact with their local community and use the facilities of the city.

Look forward

The organisers of this international sporting event in Marbella hope it sets a positive tone to 2026. Combining high-level sport competition, educational sessions and activities for families, the tournament hopes to create an environment that is inclusive and where young athletes are able to learn, perform and enjoy themselves.

The Tewam Tournament promises four days filled with intense matches, international camaraderie and unique opportunities for young people to develop. This will further enhance Marbella’s reputation as an event host city.
