Harvest of hope: Marbella gardeners feed the vulnerable

Marbella Gardeners Harvest Hope: Feed the Vulnerable

Marbella Town Council has joined forces with the Huertos Marbella Verde Association and the Red Cross to launch a humanitarian initiative to bring fresh, natural food to more than 270 people in need.

Ten volunteer gardeners actively supported the project based in a municipal allotment at Huerta del Prado.

Marbella’s mayor, Ángeles Muñoz, oversaw the delivery of the harvest to the humanitarian organisation on Thursday, July 10, in a project which stems from the council’s allocation of a 28,000-square-metre plot, where nearly 100 Marbella residents grow their own produce. “It’s a source of pride to see not only how they care for and maintain this space but also how this 200-square-metre public allotment has revealed immense generosity,” Muñoz stated. She praised the residents for producing their own food in the heart of the city, promoting ‘zero-kilometre’ agriculture with both social and ecological benefits.

Susana Radío, president of Marbella’s Red Cross, expressed gratitude for the collaboration, saying that the donated produce, which included tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, and courgettes, will directly benefit those supported by the organisation. She explained that “this donation allows us provide fresh, nutritious products to those families who are currently suffering from food poverty and have limited access to healthier, more affordable options.” Radío explained that the Red Cross conducts individualised assessments of each family to ensure aid reaches those most in need. She announced that future initiatives would include garden visits and training for gardening, which is a field in great demand with job seekers.

Dionisio Carrillo said all the donated produce was produced using organic farming methods without chemicals. He said that they only used natural inputs and respect the environment, while ensuring food quality.
