Marbella focuses on bringing back nature

Marbella Council is launching an innovative project to improve the Guadaiza river, with a focus on sustainability, flooding prevention, and eco-restoration. 

Announced at an educational session held at the Trapiche Centre Cultural in Guadaiza the scheme is a result of recent flooding at Cortijo Blanco, caused by heavy rains, and the overflowing of dams.

The aim of renaturalisation is to preserve the river ecosystem which has been recognised as one of the key areas in the Natura 2000 Network. Planting native species on the banks of the river, removing invasive plants, and improving its flow are all part of the plans. The project, which covers almost 3.5 kilometers, will also add 1,625 meters of riverside paths and improve accessibility.

The ultimate aim is to connect Marbella’s mountains with the coast in a more healthy, open space, which will hopefully encourage residents to spend more time outdoors. Natural techniques will be used to monitor the environment and ensure that river channels flow effectively. This will reduce flood risks, while increasing biodiversity.

At a community session, attended by some 50 locals and environmental experts, residents received more clarity on the €2 million project’s scope, though the media were not invited.

The council sees Marbella as not just a hotspot for beach lovers, but also a nature sanctuary inland. Guadaiza is a crucial ecological corridor for this reason, combining conservation with community involvement and setting a new model for sustainable urban design in Marbella. Soon, the work will begin to rejuvenate the riverside.
