Aloha Golf Club in Marbella’s Nueva Andalucia marked its 50th anniversary with a grand gala dinner on Saturday, October 25, attended by over 500 guests, including Marbella Mayor Angeles Muñoz.
She hailed the club as “an emblem of the Costa del Sol”, and acknowledged its crucial role in elevating the region’s reputation globally as one of best golf destinations around the world. The club’s rich history of hosting top-level tournaments, and its picturesque and steep par 72 course were highlighted at the event. Aloha was also reaffirmed by the event as a cornerstone in Marbella’s legacy of sports tourism.
Aloha Golf history
Aloha Golf Club, founded on October 25, 75, was the last masterpiece of Spanish architect Javier Arana. He tragically died before it was completed. The course was designed on 50 hectares that were originally owned by Banco de Bilbao. It was completed by Enrique Canales, and it introduced innovative water hazards, narrow, tree-lined, fairways, and challenged players in the urban confines of Nueva Andalucia. In 1983, Aloha became a private club under IBSA’s development. It hosted dignitaries such as Juan de Borbon (father of King Juan Carlos I).
Its 6,293-metre layout with 11 lakes, and breathtaking views of the La Concha mountain has been praised for its elegance and strategic difficulty over the years. In 2023, a renovation replaced all the greens in a three-month period, further improving its reputation.
Praised by Angeles Muñoz for “elegance and professional service”
Mayor Muñoz, speaking at the gala, praised Aloha’s “elegance and professional service”, talking up its contribution to Marbella’s image as a centre for sport and wellness. The club’s legacy includes hosting major tournaments like the 1978 Spanish Amateur Championship, the 1989 International Mixed Professional won by the great Miguel Angel Jimenez, and the 2007–2012 Andalucian Open on the European Tour. Aloha launched the Legends Tour 2025 by hosting the Staysure Marbella Legends. It attracted 60 professionals, including 41 European Tour champions, from 17 countries. Local tourism was estimated to increase by 20% during peak seasons.
The celebrations began in February with the Staysure event, and culminated at the October gala. Members gathered and tributes to legacy were paid during the October gala. Esperanza Gómez, of Turismo Costa del Sol, stated that “Staysure Marbella Legends places the Costa del Sol on the map as a destination for golfers.” Aloha’s blend of historical significance, scenic beauty and world-class amenities will ensure its place in the “Costa del Golf” as it looks forward to its next fifty years.
