In partnership with Avanza bus company, Marbella launches the first bus line in the city equipped with air purification technology. This will improve passenger safety, comfort and health.
Plan begins with six buses that serve the Costa del Sol University Hospital, which transports approximately 500,000 people annually. Later, the plan will expand to include school and university transportation services.
Wiwell developed the advanced photocatalytical technology that is used in this project. Councillor Félix Romero, who attended the presentation, said that trials conducted during the previous administration under Enrique Rodríguez demonstrated a 73 per cent reduction in pathogens and pollutants, resulting in cleaner air inside the buses than outside.
Romero stated that this is yet another step taken by the City Council to improve the well-being of its citizens. “We are not just improving a service that is essential, but also doing so in the interest of everyone’s wellbeing.” The procurement process to install this technology on the entire fleet of school and university buses has already begun, assuring parents that “their children are travelling in a clean, safe and pathogen-free atmosphere.”
Pascuale Di Gregorio, Wiwell’s general director, joined by Avanza representative José Antonio Romero, explained that the patented technology from northern Italy is eco-friendly, safe for people and animals, and requires no maintenance beyond routine cleaning. Di Gregorio stated that the 10-year guarantee makes it a long-term, sustainable investment in healthier spaces.
The system employs photovoltaic films which degrade microorganisms and pollutants under artificial or daylight light. This results in a near 100 per cent reduction of pollution and eliminates bodily odours. Marbella’s pioneering initiative establishes it as a leader when it comes to sustainable and health-focused transportation. The city plans to integrate the technology in all its transport systems.
