The AP-7, which runs from Marbella to Benalmadena, will be closed for a few hours this weekend as crews continue with the major noise reduction works on the Marbella bypass.
Overnight ramp closure details
Officials of Spain’s Ministry of Transport have confirmed From Sunday, 1 August, 10pm, the exit ramp at kilometer 1044 will close. It will reopen Monday, 3 August, 6am. This eight-hour window should allow teams the opportunity to continue installing panels that reduce traffic noise near homes.
Why the work is needed
The noise of traffic from the busy AP-7 is a problem for residents who live near the Marbella version. The constant movement of vehicles disrupts sleep and increases stress for residents living within 200 metres of an AP-7. According to ministry figures, more than 1,000 homes will be able to benefit when the complete set of barriers are in place. Yet, there has not been any mention of the homes that line the Mijas section of the A-7.
The scale of the project
Crews are installing 28 noise-reducing panels Along an eight-kilometre stretch, the bypass is surrounded by barriers. The total length of the barriers is 6,612 meters, and their heights range from 2.5 to 4 metres. Later, the metal panels will be covered with ivy in order to better blend into their surroundings. Total investment stands at €13.1 million, paid for entirely by taxpayers’ money through the European Union.
Alternative routes for drivers
Drivers who are trying to get onto the AP-7 late at night or in the early hours of the morning during this closure must follow a diversion clearly marked. The closed area is Avenida Arias de Velasco. Continue along Calle Serenata and turn onto Avenida duque de Lerma. Finally, rejoin the motorway via the on-ramp at kilometer 1043. Traffic will be guided by signs throughout the night and the main carriageway remains open.
The progress so far and what remains to be done
The works on the noise barriers caused earlier lane restriction and restrictions at night around the same exits. The area between kilometer 1044.7 and 1042.77, which includes the Avenida del Trapiche as well as the A-355 junction and local shopping zones is the current focus. The screens will reduce noise for the homes that are closest to the road. This should make it quieter at night and improve daytime conditions.
Local drivers should allow extra time if they are travelling on Monday morning. The main safety measures remain in place as the final sections of barrier are installed. This project aims to improve the quality of life for thousands of residents living along one of Costa del Sol’s busiest motorways.
