Marbella City Council has reaffirmed its strong commitment to local sport through the launch of its first individual sports grants, which this year has allocated €100,000 to 17 elite athletes from the municipality.
The signing ceremony took place at the Cortijo Miraflores Cultural Centre and was presided over by the Mayor, Ángeles Muñoz, alongside the Councillor for Sports, Lisandro Vieytes.
Supporting elite athletes
During the event the Mayor stressed that this initiative is a reflection of the Council’s strong support for Marbella athletes competing at regional, international and national competitions. These grants were designed to recognize not only the sporting talent, but also the dedication, hardwork, and financial efforts required to compete on the highest levels.
Complementary funding programs
Major Nuñox also announced that funding for this line of grants will increase to €130,000 next year, further demonstrating the Council’s commitment to fostering sporting excellence. The individual grants programme complements other municipal funding schemes, including €210,000 for sports clubs and associations and a similar competitive grants scheme in San Pedro Alcántara worth €150,000.
Together, these are measures that form a part of an overall strategy to enhance Marbella’s sports ecosystem and create opportunities for athletes.
Diverse disciplines
The grant recipients represent a wide range of sports, including golf, skiing, snowboarding, tennis, padel, mountain running, swimming and judo. They also include bodybuilding, fishing and adapted sports. This list of sports is a reflection of the diverse talent that exists in the city.
Invest in your community’s infrastructure and amenities
Mayor Muñoz also underlined the significant municipal investment in sport, with more than €13 million allocated this year to major projects and a further €900,000 dedicated to the maintenance, modernisation and safety of existing facilities.
She said that Marbella is a city with a rich sports culture. There are 45 disciplines available in the city’s sport schools, and over 8,000 people participate during the winter and summer season.
Concluding the ceremony, Muñoz expressed pride in Marbella’s sporting talent and stressed the sense of community that unites athletes, clubs, and residents alike. “We all feel your success,” she said. “Marbella has always been a family that supports sport. We will be there for you every step of your journey.”
