The Andalusian Regional Government approved the tender to construct a 4.2-kilometer stretch of the Guadalhorce Motorway, extend the Campanillas Motorway and improve access to the growing Malaga Technology Park.
The segment of road forms part of the planned Malaga-Campillos-Ronda motorway plan, though the full route remains undefined despite six years of announcements from the regional government. Patricia Navarro is the regional government representative for Malaga. She has hinted at the possibility that a significant portion of the road may follow an existing winding mountain route.
The section approved revives a 16-year-old project that was stalled by the former regional administration. It will ease traffic along the A-357 route, which is a vital entry to Malaga. The extension will run between Cerralba (Cártama) and the Casapalma junction (Pizarra), a stretch heavily used by commuters from metropolitan municipalities heading to work or conducting business in the capital.
Project delays have been a constant problem, as the project was delayed by many months from its original timeline. This is because updating plans and requiring new designs proved to be impossible. Future contractors will be responsible for an additional four kilometres, and project draughting is already underway. This process should take two years. Regional authorities are hoping to speed up this timeline.
The regional government has also announced that the road between Ronda, and the Los Pinos Urbanisation will be widened to a further four kilometres. Although described as a highway, this section looks more like a connection between small urbanisations near Ronda.
