Malaga is the first city in history to have more female doctors registered than male ones. According to the Andalucian Medical Council’s latest data, Malaga is home to 5,328 female doctors compared to 5,174 male doctors.
Figures also reveal a clear trend regarding where doctors, both male and female, choose to work. Women are leading the way in Malaga’s hospitals. Only 31% of women doctors work privately, compared to 67.5% in the public hospital sector. Only 2 percent of doctors split their time between the public and private sectors.
The private clinics are more popular with men. Only 42 percent of male doctors are employed in the public sector, 40 percent work privately and 18% do both.
Malaga has 8 647 doctors who are currently active, and the private sector of healthcare is rapidly growing. Private healthcare now accounts for one in three of the doctors in Malaga. The figure is even higher if you add those who combine both sectors.
This report shows that women doctors are more likely than men to select clinical specialties, but men still dominate surgical roles.
Medical leaders call for better support to help female doctors balance work and family, particularly during pregnancy and nursing.
This trend is a reflection of a wider shift in Andalucia. However, Malaga continues leading the way, especially when it comes to private healthcare and the number of doctors.
