Malaga CF dominated Burgos 3-0 on Friday at La Rosaleda. The win extended the remarkable streak to six straight victories, and strengthened their position as one of the best teams in Segunda. On a cold and rainy evening, the home side showed patience and control before unleashing a decisive burst of quality through goals from David Larrubia, Chupete and Adrián Niño.
The win, which was secured under difficult circumstances, continues a streak that is among the most successful in club history. It also fuels the belief that this team can be firmly placed among the six teams battling to gain promotion. This was the most pronounced expression of the team’s evolution under coach Juan Francisco Funes. His approach proved to be flexible and effective.
Malaga started cautiously, as the heavy rains limited fluency and risk. Funes made a single change, opting for Joaquín in attack while leaving Niño on the bench, but the plan remained attacking despite the circumstances. Burgos were well organised, comfortable with the conditions and initially took control of the game and tested the patience of the hosts.
Malaga struggled from the back, as the visitors adjusted more quickly to a slick surface. The home fans, who were soaked but unwavering as the game opened, kept their team going.
Breakthrough before the Interval
Malaga found space in the middle and out wide as the rain began to ease intermittently during the first half. The pressure soon became apparent.
Larrubia, in the 33rd, provided the breakthrough, with an individual moment of brilliance. He drove from a wide angle, before beating Burgos’ goalkeeper emphatically from a close angle. The goal was a great boost to the stadium, and it marked the beginning of an offensive momentum.
Five minutes after that, Carlos Puga, the right-back who has just signed a new contract for a period of three years, surged along the flank before delivering a deep cross at the backpost. Chupete then looped the ball back over his keeper using an excellent header.
The young Malaga players now dictated the pace, combining intelligence with flair against a Burgos team that had been punished rarely so severely this season.
Malaga slowly emerged from the dressing rooms, but the visitors were able to respond after the interval. They enjoyed their strongest spell. Burgos carved out at least one clear chance, but Alfonso Herrero intervened decisively to deny David González in the one-on-one and preserve the lead.
The cherry on top
Malaga, with the rain mostly gone, opted to defend the possession of the ball and took the sting out the match.
Chupete missed an opportunity for a second headed goal, but the hosts kept their composure and waited patiently for the perfect moment to finish.
That arrived after Niño entered the fray. The forward scored a decisive goal with four minutes remaining. He struck an accurate effort from the outside of the box, beyond the reach of the keeper.
Malaga’s intelligent management in a complex match underlined the growing maturity of their team and La Rosaleda was able to celebrate another important victory in promotion race.
