Malaga CF may soon have a new owner. Fenway Sports Group owners of Liverpool FC has intensified its efforts to acquire the Costa del Sol team, according to Spanish media.
Recently, a delegation from FSG (an American multi-national sports holding conglomerate) visited Spain to assess the possibility of acquiring Andalusian Club.
PSG is a competitor for the Americans
Malaga CF currently plays in the second Spanish Division and is owned by Abdullah Al-Thani. He is a Qatari Sheikh.
FSG are not the only ones interested in purchasing the club. Qatar Sports Investments, which owns PSG and the Costa del Sol Club, has expressed an interest in buying the club. The American sports group, which has been looking at football opportunities for a while, now sees Malaga as a top target.
FSG visited Malaga already in February to evaluate the future growth potential of the club and its facilities. As part of its expansion strategy, the group is actively looking for football clubs that have a long tradition and a significant growth potential. The group’s interest in Malaga is similar to that of other clubs such as Levante and Elche.
Malaga CF boasts a rich historical background
Malaga seems to be a perfect fit with FSG’s vision of growth in European Football. Andalusian club, although now in second division, has a rich and long history. They played in the quarter-finals of the Champions League in 2013. Also, ‘los boquerones’ have played for many years in La Liga and have had many local talents over the years.
This partnership may align with Al-Thani’s plans to bring experienced football operators in to help the club return to the Spanish elite and European elite.
Sergio Pellicer has expressed optimism for Malaga’s future. “We need the best for the team, and anyone wanting that is welcome.” Malaga could have a bright future with the rich corporations that are interested in the club.
