Lobo Park Antequera mourns founder Daniel Weigend

Daniel Weigend lost his life tragically recently after attempting to put out an ember in one of park’s buildings.

The announcement was posted on the park’s Instagram account. It said, “It was with deep sadness that we had to inform you that a tragedy occurred in Lobo Park.” Daniel Weigend, who was the soul and heart of our park, died while trying to extinguish the fire that broke out in one building. Wiegland died from extreme smoke inhalation. He had been saved from the fire, but he died three days later.

As confirmed in a statement, Lobo Park Antequera was reopened for visitors on Thursday 31st July despite this tragic loss. The park said that “in Daniel’s memory, we will continue to educate our visitors on the importance of wolves in the ecosystem, their biology and their social behavior.” In the statement, Weigend also made it clear that he had set out a path to ensure that the park would continue.

Daniel Weigend is a dedicated defender for the Iberian Wolf

Located in the heart of Andalusia and on approximately 400,000 m² of land for large wolf enclosures, the park was founded by Daniel Weigend and Alexandra Stieber as a private initiative in 2002. It was only opened to public in 2004. People could now enjoy a fun day with wolves while learning about the various species and their lifestyles. The sanctuary was designed to mimic the natural lifestyle of wolves to give visitors a glimpse into their world. This natural behaviour is observed on the tours, and this reduces the fear that most people feel about wolves.

Weigend and Alexandra Stieber were deeply involved with the care of wolves. This was a complex job that required precision and expertise. Weigend is known for his passion for dogs, and the park reflects that. Weigend, a former police and military dog trainer and author of many field studies, dedicated his life to spreading his knowledge about wolves.

Antequera’s mayor, Manolo Barón, expressed his condolences on his social media accounts, mourning the loss of Weigend. “As Mayor of Antequera I am deeply saddened by the death of Daniel Weigend. We have lost a person who was dedicated to the environment and nature. I send my deepest condolences his family and team. Rest in peace.”
