LIFE IN SPAIN  A Village festival in Algodonales that reches into the very soul of Andaucia


The big festivals are great. They are.

Sevilla at the first night April Fair. Portada is lit up for the first time; Malaga during Holy Week, when the soldiers of La Legion carry the Crucifix – these moments are unforgettable.

But if you want to see the true soul of Andalucia, travel to the smaller, more homely festivals – the ones that rarely make it onto Instagram Package tours or feeds

Take Algodonales, for instance – a lovely little town, 36 kilometres north-west of Ronda.

The flower offering to the pilgrimage is made on the last Saturday of May, just prior to Pilgrimage Day. Virgencita de la Sierra takes place. This is a beautiful local tradition, performed on horseback before the Church of Santa Ana by riders in traditional Andalucian dress.

This is a festival in the truest sense of ‘local’. Tourists aren’t the ones who dress up and mount horses. They’re doing it because they’ve always done it – every May, since… forever.

Villagers recognize the carriage drivers and riders. This matters – to them, and to the spectators.

The Saturday ‘Flower Offering’ is technically just the beginning. It is obvious that the Algodonales people turn it into an extravagant street party with music, costumes, dancing and more. Alegria.

Sunday is the day of rest. Camino begins. Around 8am, carts gather in the Plaza de la Constitución, and by 10am, the procession departs for the Puente la Nava (Nava Bridge).

There, you’ll find bars, fairground rides, and food stalls – all operating throughout the day.

On Sunday night, in the village, a live group belts out party songs like Movimientos SexyPeople drink, laugh, and talk under the stars.

In recent years, the traditional festivals of Andalucia have become more meaningful for small rural communities.

The village is still inhabited by young people who have left to find work. fiestas dear – and return when they can.

They hug and kiss each other, but it’s bittersweet, because they were once neighbors, and are only reunited during these short celebrations.
